bootstrap table - trying to understand sample code [on hold]

I just recently discovered bootstrap tables and I am trying to disect one of the pagination examples, found here:

Question

I can't see how the client side code is tied in to the server, aka. what is it that triggers the call to the server side code? I see that the html code has a data-url parameter on the table... but in my own tests, that alone doesn't trigger the cgi-script i have to return data.

I've been reading the documentation found here: http://ift.tt/1BpULg5

And it makes reference to a "load" method. I've searched the sample code for this method and it's not being called anywhere.
